The Tennessee Volunteers came to Oxford to play a little football. Five years we’ve awaited for the mighty Vols return. On their last visit to Oxford back in 09′ we were humiliated by Dexter McCluster running wildly through the Tennessee defense to take the Rebels to a 42-17 victory. No way that was going to happen again. Even with Ole Miss rated #3 in the country and a undefeated record, our Vols were rebuilding and playing tough opponents, well tough! The game was going to be close. I knew it.
Aware of the repercussions of a Rebel loss, and the less than stellar season for the Vols had thus far expereinced, I went into the game torn between root’n for the team of my blood or the Rebels where my dear daughters were/are being educated. My years in Mississippi took us to more red n’ blue events and our allegiance to the Vols had slowly grown some competition and become tainted the Rebel way. I knew I won if I lost, and lost if I won. We were torn the whole game through!
It was, indeed, one of the more difficult games Bess and I ever attended. We couldn’t cheer for Ole Miss score’s and we really didn’t want to get too over exuberant for an Volunteer lead! We cheered for UT to drive while being pleased for an Ole Miss interception. With Tennessee leading 3-0 I can safely say I was finally relieved when Ole Miss took the ball in for their first score. They never looked back after that! Although difficult, I have convinced myself I can root for the Rebs this year! The stars are perfectly aligned for both them and the Mississippi State Bulldogs to showcase Mississippi football this coming Thanksgiving weekend as two undefeated teams. That would be awesome and worth the Big Orange loss of this past weekend. My team has ante’d up and I hope the Egg Bowl possibilities remain for the next few weeks!
